Discover Marrakesh: The Red City’s Rich Legacy

Marrakesh, often referred to as the “Red City” due to its iconic red sandstone structures, is the fourth largest city in Morocco and boasts a rich history dating back to 1070. Founded as the imperial capital of the Almoravid Empire, its cultural, religious, and trade significance for the Maghreb region is undeniable. The city’s historic medina quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a bustling hive of vendors, making it a significant economic hub and leading tourist destination in Africa.

With renowned landmarks like Jemaa el-Fnaa, the busiest square in Africa, and a legacy of French influence, Marrakesh remains an enchanting mix of past and present. Modern developments include extensive real estate and hotel expansions, while the city’s traditions are showcased through its vast marketplaces or souks, attracting tourists globally.

Meet Felix Mathivet

The city that enchants with its rich history, vibrant colors, and welcoming locals. But to truly uncover its secrets, you need an insider’s perspective. This is where Felix Mathivet, the Chief Insider at Marrakech Insiders, shines.

At the heart of Insiders Experience is a belief that our guides, our insiders, truly make the difference. Google defines an “insider” as someone who possesses special knowledge or access to a special group. This couldn’t be more true for Felix and his team, as they’re passionate about unveiling the many layers of Marrakech to travelers.

Felix’s journey began in 2011 when he joined the Insiders in China. His quest for adventure took him from Shanghai to Xi’an and then to Guilin. It was in Southern China, alongside his beloved wife, Panda, where he collaborated with Club Med.

Why Marrakech, Felix?

For Felix, this city wasn’t just another destination. It was a dream. “I relocated nearly two years ago. The allure of setting up sidecar tours in this mesmerizing city was irresistible,” says Felix.

Passion for Sidecars:

Sidecars hold a special place in Felix’s heart. “China introduced me to the world of sidecars. What captivated me was how they enable you to share the joy of biking with family,” he reminisces.

China vs. Morocco:

Both countries hold fond memories for Felix. “Morocco and China have a shared warmth towards children. In places like France, taking kids to a restaurant might earn you frowns, but here, just like in China, it’s a celebration.”

The Magic of Marrakech:

To choose a single aspect is a challenge for Felix. Yet, he lists, “The stunning light, diverse landscapes within a 50km stretch, the haunting call to prayer, the aroma of spices, and the ubiquitous vintage vehicles make Marrakech unforgettable.”

Explorations and Accidental Discoveries:

For Felix, the Atlas Mountains are a treasure trove of wonders. But some discoveries were purely serendipitous, like the ancient Coranic school outside Marrakech. “It’s a gem with over 400 years of history. I was fortunate to learn about its past over tea with the descendants of its founder,” he shares.

Marrakech Mysteries:

For those interested in the local lore, Felix has tales about djinns. “These are spirits believed to inhabit a parallel world. Locals believe that djinns occasionally venture into our world, often disguised as cats,” he warns with a twinkle in his eye.
